What a privilege to speak at The Art of Leadership for Women conferences, a unique event that brought together exceptional people and topics curated to address the most critical issues facing leaders in our world today.
This empowering conference provided a platform for leaders to develop their skills, engage their talent, and foster high-performing teams. It was an invaluable opportunity for networking, learning, and championing change, particularly for women from all industries. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow alongside fellow trailblazers Fontini Iconomopoulos, Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser, Lisa Laflamme, and Ritu Bhasin.
In an era of rapid change and evolving workplaces, the role of leaders has never been more critical. This gathering allowed me to learn, grow, and connect with those who are navigating the ever-changing landscape of our workplaces. If you couldn’t attend, here are some of the insightful tidbits to take into your leadership practice.
During my keynote, I delved into the future of leadership and the qualities required to thrive in our rapidly evolving world. I introduced the concept of the "Consciousness Quotient" (CQ), a term I have coined to encompass our entire human intelligence system. This system focuses on creativity, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and contribution. Unlike the traditional Left brain, Intelligence Quotient (IQ), and Right brain, Emotional Quotient (EQ), CQ emphasizes a holistic approach to leadership. Integrating cognitive, emotional, and social aspects empowers leaders and helps them to navigate complexities with resilience and adaptability.
One of the fundamental pillars of my philosophy is the concept of the "life diet." Drawing inspiration from the importance of “you are what you consume”, I shared how a well-rounded life can nourish our overall well-being and enhance our effectiveness as leaders. I emphasized the significance of incorporating play, connection, and downtime into our daily lives. These essential ingredients foster creativity, resilience, and a sense of fulfillment, enabling leaders to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
I wasn’t alone in this belief that effective leadership starts with effective self-care and health. This was a common theme throughout the conference from many of the other speakers. The importance was placed on the relationship to self as well as the relationship to others and on the health of the individual and the team before the goal of success.
This year's program was carefully curated to tackle the pressing challenges that leaders and their organizations face. The sensational line-up of speakers inspired and enlightened the audience throughout the day. Each speaker brought their unique expertise and insights to empower all those in attendance.
Lisa LaFlamme, (@LisaLaFlamme_) a beloved Canadian and veteran journalist, captivated the audience with her session on navigating adversity, embracing change, and building confidence. Her words resonated deeply as she shared personal anecdotes and powerful strategies for overcoming challenges and embracing setbacks as opportunities for growth. Lisa reminded us of the strength that lies within us and how effective leaders understand the value of protecting relationships — especially when navigating uncertainty or difficult times.
"In perspective, I looked at my situation and knew it was something I could come back from, and that in these situations, you have to come back stronger." - Lisa Laflamme
Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser, (@wick_22) a celebrated five-time Olympic medalist and hockey icon, delivered a compelling talk on team effectiveness, performance, and success. Drawing from her extensive experience as an elite athlete, Wickenheiser shared valuable insights on the power of teamwork, dedication, and doing your best. A big part of resilience and managing stressful situations for Hayley has always been to remember “you are not what you do” and just to keep moving forward and doing your best. In order not to get caught up in the stress of “what we do,” it’s vital that we recognize that rest and self-care are essential components of peak performance. She reinforced the significance of balance and self-renewal in our leadership journey.
"It's one thing to be the best in the world, but another thing to be the best for the world." - Hayley Wickenheiser
Fotini Iconomopoulos, (@Fotiniicon) a leading expert in negotiation and communication, shared invaluable strategies for effective negotiation, communication, and conflict management. Her engaging session emphasized the power of active listening and the art of saying less to get more. Iconomopoulos' expertise and practical tips empowered the audience to enhance their communication skills and build stronger relationships and focus on finding commonality, offering compliments, and prioritizing cooperation to build relationships as the most effective leadership strategy. Remember, attentive listening fosters trust, understanding, and effective collaboration.
“Likability doesn’t come from giving people what they want.” - Fotini Iconomopoulos
Ritu Bhasin, (@Ritu_Bhasin) a globally recognized diversity and inclusion expert, took the stage to address the importance of inclusion, empowerment, and cultivating a positive workplace culture where everyone feels safe to be their authentic self. Bhasin's session emphasized the significance of creating environments where individuals feel a sense of belonging and can contribute their unique perspectives. Creating a safe environment where others feel comfortable and accepted for who they are ultimately starts with you. As a leader, to accept others, you must first accept yourself. Her message resonated deeply with me, as I believe that fostering inclusivity and empowering individuals are crucial aspects of effective leadership.
“There is nothing wrong with you, and there never was.” - Ritu Bhasin
A special thank you to Bill Williams, (@b4BillGWilliams) who was our amazing MC and inspired us all with his message of living an electric life by tapping into our unique enthusiasm. By practicing mindsets and healthy practices, we can shift our energy and learn to leave work at the end of the day energized instead of drained. Contrary to what you may think, giving energy doesn’t deplete it; it actually attracts more energy to you from others, and prioritizing yourself isn’t selfish; it helps you to become an endless well of energy for yourself and others.
The Art of Leadership conference provided a glimpse into the future of leadership, inspiring me to continue cultivating resilience, balance, and innovation skills. As we navigate the ever-changing landscape of our workplaces, it’s crucial to embrace a holistic approach that integrates our entire human intelligence system. By prioritizing a balanced life diet that encompasses play and exploration, connection to each other, and downtime, we can foster our own well-being while effectively leading others.
